Unit 1: Safety, Scientific Method, and Measurements

Unit 1 Objectives:

1.1  Outine how to be safe in a science classroom
1.2  Identify and explain proper use of common laboratory equipment
1.3  Outline the scientific method
1.4  Distinguish a hypothesis from facts, laws, or principles
1.5  Differentiate between an observation and an inference
1.6  Identify variables for an investigation (controlled, independent, and dependent)
1.7  Define theory and explain why they are useful in science
1.8  Explain the importance of the metric system and perform metric conversions between the most common metric prefixes
1.9  Determine the best tools for measurement, and read them accurately
1.10  Report measurements and calculations to the correct number of significant figures
1.11  Use the factor label/dimensional analysis method to convert between units of measurement
1.12  Write very small or very large numbers in scientific notation
1.13  Read, interpret, and create graphs that are appropriate for the data being presented
1.14  Distinguish between accuracy and precision
1.15  Define and calculate percent error
