Unit 2: ECOLOGY

Unit 2: Objectives

Objective 2.1: Explain why Ecology is important, and describe how it is studied (i.e. field studies)
Objective 2.2: Outline the levels of ecological organization
Objective 2.3: Differentiate between biotic and abiotic factors
Objective 2.4: Explain the processes involved in climate change
Objective 2.5: Outline the characteristics of Earth’s major biomes, including aquatic ecosystems
Objective 2.6: Differentiate between producers and consumers. Explain how each obtains energy. Provide examples.
Objective 2.7: Describe flow of energy in ecosystems using food chains, food webs, ecological pyramids
Objective 2.8: Diagram and explain the different parts of all of the biogeochemical cycles (C, N, P).
Objective 2.9: Outline how carbon cycles between the hydrosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere.
Objective 2.10: Outline the Nitrogen Cycle, and explain why Nitrogen is needed by all living organisms
Objective 2.11: Provide examples of how human activity can disrupt biogeochemical cycles
Objective 2.14 Define population, and describe how scientists study populations
Objective 2.15 Describe three different ways in which populations can be distributed
Objective 2.16 Compare and contrast between density-dependent and density-independent limiting factors. Provide examples.
Objective 2.17 Relate all previous objectives to human population growth
Objective 2.18 Differentiate between a habitat and a niche
Objective 2.19 Explain how competition shapes communities
Objective 2.20 Describe predator-prey relationships
Objective 2.21 Describe herbivore-plant relationships, and how this affects ecosystems
Objective 2.22 Define keystone species and explain why they are significant
Objective 2.23 Define symbiosis
Objective 2.24 Explain commensalism and mutualism. Be able to provide examples
Objective 2.25 Define ecological succession
Objective 2.26 Outline how primary succession occurs. Explain under what circumstances this occurs
Objective 2.27 Outline how secondary succession occurs. Explain under what circumstances this occurs
Objective 2.28 Explain and provide examples of different types of biodiversity
Objective 2.29 Identify the benefits of biodiversity
Objective 2.30 Explain what ecosystem services are, and provide examples
Objective 2.31 Define ecological footprint, and explain how it is calculated
Objective 2.32 Compare the typical ecological footprint of an American to the global average
Objective 2.33 Describe Anthropocene
Objective 2.34 Outline the evidence that supports climate change and describe the impacts of climate change
